Charles Johnson of LGF pointed out that the High Res photo has been pulled. Zombie from Zombietime has performed a very deep analysis of the Ambulance incident.
After looking at them both myself. I saw a little something extra. I thought the holes or slits in the roof looked a little too uniform.
They seemed like the kind of marks made by an axe to me. I wanted to see for myself so I performed a few steps in Photoshop CS. I wanted to recreate the depth of the Rooftop in it's viewing angle and distance. You are encouraged to follow allong and to try this yourself. I opened up the High Res original and performed the following;
First, I created a New Layer and copied this original photo to it. So that I had two layers of the same photo.

I then accessed the Vanishing point Filter from the Filter menu:
I created a matching depth grid by marking corner points over top of the Red Cross on the roof.
I stretched the grid size so that it covered the whole roof of the Ambulance.

I then used the Clone Tool to create new holes at varying distances. The Green ones are the new holes. They have lines that point
Back to the original source I used to clone from. The Yellow circles are used as comparison references.
The slits are about 5-7 inches long. Conclusion: The holes and slits are of consistent size and dimensions of a Rescue Fire Axe.
Even the tears in the big whole match that pattern.
A fire axe has a sharp pointed pick end and straight blade. It is designed to cut through wood and metal to allow rescue personal to penetrate a property. These
holes show a very similar pattern and the sizes are also consistent.
of similar width or some sort of steel shank.
Fire Axe strike locations:

Explosive Fragmentation particles are usually round or jagged and of varied size, (Unless they are bird shot). These slits are clean and straight.
The slits and holes are bent inward which is inconsistent with a fragmentation
from inside the Ambulance. If they are indeed fragmentation holes
then it, obviously, happened from
the outside and not the inside. A Rescue Fire Axe can make the same type of slits and holes.
But wait!.. I imagined someone being on the roof and
actually chopping it by hand then but then I noticed the dirt on the white part of the roof.
Tracks and footprints? I had to check this out.
Again, I took a few steps in Photoshop CS to enhance the dirt on the roof.
First, I did a Replace Color
function under Image, Adjustment menu. As follows:

The Yellow and Blue color patch is marking the spot that I color sampled with the dropper:
I set this filter to the following parameters.
Fuzziness: +42, Lightness: -61
I then used the Exposure function under Image, Adjustment menu:
I set Exposure to +0.20, Offset to -0.0650 and Gamma to 1.35(not 1.45)
I then set the Unsharp Mask filter to the following:
Amount: 36%, Radius, 11.1 and Threshold at 6
You can see my final high resolution results here (High Resolution)
I then performed a stretch and distort manipulation on the roof to get a flattened view like an overhead view. This is what I got:

I see lots of foot prints all over the place and some sort of weird wheel tracks on the roof. I don't know what these are but something or someone was on the roof.
If I had one more high resolution image of the roof from another angle I could then 3D model the whole roof to get a more detailed look.
UPDATE: SEP 1, 2006
Magic Bullet Proof Headliner Fabric. Notice the absence of Shrapnel holes around the fabric near the vent hole.

When flying shrapnel has enough force to slice open a steal roof then there should enough force leftover to cut through a headliner fabric.
Very curious?
BONUS PHOTOS:
Photo enhanced from Boston Globe;

Notice the other ambulance to the right of the frame. It has a Damaged tail light. See the debris and glass on the ground all about? This is a scrap yard.
I believe that this vehicle was decommissioned and put into a bone yard where it sat till ready to be use as a Prop-a-ganda set piece.
Photo Enhanced Look inside the Hole: Gosh! That missile really wrecked havoc inside there!
